type='text'>Cage Free or Free Range?

This article has been written by Alex MacDougall.
Alex is a veteran of the US Christian Music Business not only as a Musician, but also in management, especially in marketing and A&R. Alex has been associated with the Vineyard since 1996 and has been part of some of the most successful recording projects in the history of the Industry. However first and foremost Alex loves worship in the local church.

Have you ever wondered the difference is between Free Range Chickens and Cage Free Chickens? If you've been confused at your local grocer over this quandry, let me help you. "Free Range", according to the USDA, means that the chicken has had access to the outside, but is not necessarily grown outside. "Cage Free", on the other hand, is a commercial designation identifying the chicken as not being grown in a battery cage. Both designations have come about over the past few years as a direct result of the "inhumane treatment" of chickens. Which brings me to my point.

Churches with drum cages are inhumane! The plexiglass world that drummers animate themselves in should be the LAST on anyone's list of acoustic problem solvers, yet have increasingly become the first solution that music ministers, worship leaders and pastors are much too quick to adopt.

Recently, as a listener and worshiper, I've personally been subjected to 3 separate and horrific drum setups. In one, the drummer was placed in a completely separate ROOM, with a large plate glass in front of him. He was isolated enough for a studio recording to take place. At another church, the drum cage had a roof on it so low that the drummer had to hunch over to get behind his drums. You couldn't even hear him, but he was moving his arms, so I guess he was playing. And finally, the ultimate sentence to drummers, a church with TWO enclosures- both with roofs! The first cage for the drummer and the second for the poor percussionist. You could see his shaker and tambourine on a stand next to his wind chimes. His domicile was located next to where the brass section sat. I wondered what these monsters must do to deserve such treatment!

I detest these cages. I abhor them.
The presense of one of them tells me that...

1. As a drummer, I am not trusted to possess any sense of musical dynamics or sensitivity, or any reasonable disciplines of nuance.

2. I am out of control and a "rogue" on the platform, and do not know how to work with the venue, players and singers.

3. What I do is offensive to the ears of the congregation, and not necessarily a calling given to me from the Lord.

4. I am not a valued member of the worship team, nor do I need to really participate in the worship experience. They are simply placating me.

5. The PA system and house mixer are sophisticated and amazing, and I don't need to be worried about being heard. The pristine skills of the part time mixer are well-honed and his/her ears are finely tuned instruments in themselves.

King David said to MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE and TO PRAISE HIM ON LOUD CYMBALS. Not obnoxious cymbals mind you, but loud nevertheless.

What if guitar players were told to wear a blanket over their instrument, or were forced to use a frozen dill pickle chip in lieu of a guitar pick? What if a pastor with a high-pitched or harsh voice had their microphone run through a digital device to "smooth-out" their tone? Perhaps King David's tambourine, cymbal and drum players should have been relegated to a tent on the side of the palace. Selah.

I learned to play drums during a time when the ride cymbal had many more possible sounds than simply beating on it like a trash can lid. The cymbal had various areas and characteristics to it. A rim. A bell. The top. The edge. Underneath. Ridges. You learned about how to read a room, play with finesse and dynamics, and control yourself. You learned to provide a foundation AND COLOR the music where appropriate. I agree with Carl Albrecht's (see Worship Musician July/August 2009 issue) call for drummers to become more versitile and flexible to their churches acoustic needs. Using "smaller venue" kits, cymbals and drums (if you have that kind of money), and building your stick bag to include brushes, mallets and hot-rods, is sound advice. You can also modify your playing to include some drums and hand percussion. In short, know how to creatively ADAPT to the situation. I've been in circumstances where I only used a cymbal, conga, and some hand percussion, and it all worked out great. But the immediate "fix" of acrylic panels and enclosures is a degrading solution to anyone serious about music or worship drumming as a calling.

How many churches and venues are still "Cage Free"? I suspect fewer by the day. With such a beautiful legacy of historically causing the arts to flourish, I think this time the church has adopted an egg.

Worship Team Leaders and Pastors...Think outside the box!
And Drummers...Pursue cage free! ADAPT, don't adopt.

"Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel,
but on a candlestick; and it gives light unto all that are in the home". (Mt. 5:15)

Reprint used by permission of Christian Musician Magazine

Editors Note : Personally I play drums behind a screen like this twice a month, and I think that there are occasions where the screen are the right thing to do. However I do agree with Alex that they are far to prevalent and often used in situations where they really aren't necessary. On the occasions when I do get to play outside "the cage" I have to say its feels much more like the band is together.

Please do let us know your thoughts on screens and send in your drummer jokes to and we will try and post some of them on the blog. This work is two-fold in its approach:

1. We help with leadership training for church pastors and worship leaders.
2. We support both financially and with man-power an outreach programme with an orphanage just outside Odessa.

I recently had the privilege of leading a 10-strong team to spend a week at the Andreevo orphanage where we embarked on a programme of drama, sports, arts & crafts and general craziness! This is the third such trip to the orphanage and we are beginning to see the fruits of our labours both in a spiritual sense and also in seeing improvements to the orphanage itself. The director likened our visits to a big drop of water falling onto a stone and each time it fell it made a deeper hole. I think he was trying to say that we are making a significant long-term difference!!

Through the VRUK network with Vineyard churches around the UK and also in Ukraine itself, there are now 3 UK Vineyard churches involved in orphanage outreach and 2 Ukrainian Vineyard churches. As time goes on we hope to be able to resource further orphanages in the Ukraine by expanding the number of churches involved with the ultimate aim of bringing the love of God into the lives of many children who have very little hope.

Off to Ukraine

Our boss Chris has left this week for the Ukraine along with a team from the Hull Vineyard Church.

They are leading a week long club at an orphanage, using games, craft, music and lots more to have fun with the children there and to share Gods love for them.

Your prayers would be most welcome for fun, friendships and safety as they travel.

Spring Harvest

I got back from Spring Harvest in Minehead yesterday. We had a great week in the All Age Worship celebration, playing messy games, dancing to funky songs and learning how to be an apprentice of Jesus. (The theme in all of this years SH venues.)

Nigel Hemming headed up the team along with Amy, Amy, Dave (Hull Vineyard) Kat, Zara, (Network Vineyard Birmingham) James (Bristol Vineyard) and another Dave (Causeway Coast Vineyard) with invaluable help from the other Hemmings - Jo, Becky Zac and JJ.

We used a bunch of songs from the new Great Big God Live DVD that went down a storm, had a few technical difficulties with some phone in games; (and what I think we would all put as our highlight) had some amazing opportunities for ministry to pray with the families who came and for the children & parents to pray with each other. As Dave said one night there is no junior Jesus or mini Holy Spirit, we all get to play no matter how young or old.

A brilliant week - if you were with us - thanks. :-D

Great Big God Live Premiere

The Great Big God Live DVD is available right now through our webstore - click here to jump to the product page or read on for some more Great Big God news!

The DVD looks and sounds amazing - and last Saturday we met up with Nigel Hemming and all the dancers and choir from the DVD for a premier screening at the Electric Cinema in Birmingham. With his debut album, Ryan Delmore proves to be one of those artists. The singer/songwriter combines his influences that are steeped rich in gospel and Christian beliefs and combines it with an Americana based sound. His raspy vocals and acoustic guitar bring you into the album on “Mercy,” as he crafts a lyric about being forgiven and washed of sins. This acoustic style that originally captures your attention continues to be displa yed throughout the album on tracks like “Teach Me All Your Ways,” “Nowhere To Be Seen,” and album closer, “Love of God.” However, he also chooses to wear his influences from the rock and country genres proudly on his sleeve as well on this album. Tracks like “Provide For Me” introduce a more Neil Young type sound to the album as the music behind the vocals and catchy guitar riff take center stage to draw you into the song, as well as on “The World Can’t Take It Away,” where Delmore will have you tapping your feet along with the rhythm section as he brings a Tom Petty-esque style to the forefront. More often than not it is the lyric and vocals that act as the focal point of this collection of songs and Delmore masks his Americana style around a passionate delivery of them, and most proves that he isn’t afraid to sing about what he believes in on his debut effort.

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas from all of us at Vineyard Records.

We are all off for a Christmas break from Christmas Eve until January 5th 2009, when we will be back in the office ready for a busy 2009!

Already we have 2 recording projects planned in for the 1st half of the year, with a Ukrainian language album being recorded in January and Trent preparing to record a Live DVD in February.

Great Big God is back in 2009 too! Going through the team lists yesterday I realised that there were around 50 adults involved in some way or other during the production week as well as the 25 kids singing & dancing on the stage and the other 100 or so who will come and be in the audience. It feels like an awesome & humbling privilege that all these people are coming just because I had a crazy idea one day.

After 2 days of intense band rehearsals at the end of September we got straight into working with the various kids who are going to sing and dance on stage which was a lot of fun. We actually took some good footage which we were hoping to upload a bit sooner but we got stuck with some legal questions about whether we could show the kids on the web (I think we can so watch this space). Everyone’s been practising their words and moves, the script is almost finalised, the backdrop is being printed, the food order’s gone for the week, the t shirt colours are firmed up and I can only count 16 things left on my to do list.

I’ll be so glad when the production week finally gets underway and I can dial down on the admin front and dial up on the creative side. There is a lot of energy and passion from everyone on the team & I’m so excited about being able to capture some of that on film.

There are still a few places left in the audience so if you know kids who would be up for it, do encourage them to book in.

Cheers - Nigel Hemming

Great Big God Video Blog

You find all the details about coming to be a part of the DVD recording on this booking form...

http://www.vineyardrecords.co.uk/gbg/GBGDVD_Booking.pdf

Its in PDF format and if you don't have a PDF reader (most computers do) you can get a free one here...

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

The Great Big God Blog

Announcing Great Big God Live DVD
When the idea for the song ‘Our God is a Great Big God’ first popped into my head a few months before the end of the last millennium, I had little idea that just short of 10 years later we’d be releasing a live DVD! As I write, we have seven weeks until the filming and a not insignificant amount of planning still to do. It’s true we have the band booked, we’ve hired the cameras, we’ve auditioned some children to sing and dance on stage and we’ve chosen the songs, but we still have to finalise designs, get an audience, finish logos, think about arrangements, start rehearsals, recruit security and find someone to apply the makeup!!!

Nigel Hemming

Read more about the GBG DVD project on the GBG Blog http://greatbiggodblog.blogspot.com/

FREE New Song Download - My Soul It Yearns For You

This month we have another FREE New Song download for you-
My Soul It Yearns For You is co-written by Samuel Lane (from the Burn Band, he also wrote Beautiful, All From You and So Near amongst others) and Benjamin Lucas. It's a powerful worship song of longing for more of God.

It's available for a limited time for FREE! Sooze also sang on the VRUK album 'Love Divine' and here she tells of the impact worship music is having on the guys at the Reading Young Offenders Institute. Isn't this exactly what Jesus loves!

"I lead one of the worship bands at church and as part of church each one of our homegroups/worship groups etc are encouraged to get involved in some kind of regular outreach. We heard that Reading Young Offenders Institute wanted some people to get involved with their Sunday services so we went and did a couple. They went well I think, as much as you can ever know really, so we volunteered to lead some of their 'Befriender' evenings on Wednesdays. The evenings are a chance for a few prisoners to meet some new people and someone often shares their testimony etc and tea and biscuits. We went in the Wednesday before Easter for the first time and played some songs, including 'Umbrella' by Rhianna and 'How to Save A Life' by the Fray, one of our guys shared an incredible testimony, we played some clips from the Passion and finished the night with the fab Dave Crowder song Surely We Can Change. It was an utterly incredible evening, God was there in abundance and by the end we really felt, and so did the chaplaincy guys, that we really made a breakthrough. When we left we gave them Easter eggs and copies of 'Love Divine' the new VRUK album. They were SO hugely pleased with the albums. These are some seriously tough guys, and it was incredibly humbling and exciting to see how pleased they were to have them.

We went back last Wednesday and a lot of the guys said they'd pretty much had them on non-stop since they got them, and some of the guys even go to sleep with them on. I guess the reason why it's so exciting to see is that even when I've given mates copies of albums I've been on they haven't bothered to listen to them, or shown any interest. These guys nearly bite your hand off because they don't have the cash to buy music and they don't often get people wanting to give them things. Also, some of them can't read so well, or just aren't used to reading the bible so hearing stuff in songs is perfect. Songs like 'Unfailing Love' or 'Amazing Grace' can speak to them in ways that sermons will never be able to.

This is really just a message to say what an amazing opportunity there is with worship. It's hard leading worship with 30 guys who've never been in church or sung worship just staring at you, but the difference with them having had their albums to listen to was that we could sing songs they knew and understood and it was almost like they 'got' what we were doing all of a sudden. VRUK have given us some more albums to give out and it's just really exciting that we can keep on giving and hopefully they can keep on getting. I'd just encourage anyone to see whether there might be similar opportunities where they live because it's so important to try and get the message to these guys that God loves them and won't ever give up on them."

Photos of Trent - LIVE

Last Wednesday (2 April) night a few of us from VRUK negotiated the country lanes of Lincolnshire to see Trent playing live at Spring Harvest in Skegness.

They have been playing late night gigs at Skeggy and Minehead over the past couple of weeks and even with other late night sessions going on featuring Jeff Lucas, Chris Bowater and The Riding Lights, Trent still pulled in a very respectable crowd of well over 300.

They played a great set mixing new songs with old - songs included Unfailing Love, Shine On, Glorious Life, Skin & Bones and Perfect Sacrifice.
It's not often that I am not packing a camera and this was a good time to test out a new lens... we will be posting the results on the Trent website photo page

You can still catch them at Spring Harvest in Minehead on 14 & 15 April.

Trent at Spring Harvest

If you are at Spring Harvest this Easter then keep a look out in the after hours for Trent. It really can't get much better than this in terms of speaker line-up and the richness of theological and practical teaching. The over-riding theme was that of 'Influencing and being effective in your community'.

You may either download individual talks from our website or buy all of them on memory stick for just £45 (this also includes the many and varied workshops throughout the week). Click on this link for info on how to purchase.......

The worship this year was predominantly led by the Trent band along with our American friend and guest Casey Corum. Without doubt the anthem of the week was Trent's new song 'Perfect Sacrifice' which is definately a song to look (or listen) out for. This song is available on both the New Wine 2007 'Cry Freedom' album or VRUK's 'Thankyou For The Cross' album (hear and buy them here......).

Click here for Thank You For The Cross

Unfailing Love Scores 95% on Premier Radio

A BIG Thank You to everyone who voted on the Premier Radio drive time song yesterday. We think the location had something to do with it but the real reason is that we used a great guy called Bo Reimer to mix it.. who is Swedish... and lives in Stockholm.
We also attended the Vineyard National Leaders Conference where Terry Virgo shared his wisdom, experience and heart for the Church in the UK. Totally inspiring and also a great time for us to connect with some 600 leaders from the UK Vineyard churches.
February - towards the end of the month we took the Great Big God event to the USA, stopping first at the Maryland Vineyard in Baltimore and then onto Anaheim Vineyard in sunny southern California. Maryland was very cold and we were blessed with a foot of snow on our afternoon trip to see Washington DC. Anaheim was very warm and we even got to swim in a very cold pool. The events consisted of doing a GBG Praise Party for the kids as well as doing some training for kids workers.
Also in February Vineyard Records hosted the first-ever acoustic unplugged stage at the Christian Booksellers Convention in Telford which proved to be a resounding success - well, the CBC board have asked us to do it again next year so we must have done something right!

March - we launched the Love Divine album with a listening party for all the songwriters and musicians involved with the project. Soul Survivor church in Watford kindly lent us their very cool venue for the evening and we played the completed album to eager ears! Many of the participants in the project hadn't heard the album songs since the recording night the previous November but thankfully they were happy with the final result!
April - Chris & Jeremy flew to Kiev for some chicken and meetings with Ukrainian and Russian pastors. VRUK has been involved in supporting a number of churches in Eastern Europe as well as helping fund and resource some orphanages in southern Ukraine. We are thrilled to see God working powerfully in that region and bit by bit opening people's hearts to His love. It's a privilege to be involved at such an influencial time for the church there. Back in the UK the East Anglia regional worship leaders retreat took place at a wonderful priory in Sussex. Over 40 worship leaders from the region attended for some inspirational teaching by Simon Ponsonby.

May - VRUK hosted the first ever northern Vineyard worship leaders retreat at the wonderfully remote venue of Gartmore House, nr Stirling. John & Ele Mumford (National Director of Vineyard Churches UK) shared with us how the Vineyard movement began in the UK over 20 years ago and what worship has meant to the movement ever since. Matt Turrigiano also shared with us and on the Saturday evening the Spirit of God fell in the room with such power that everyone was touched deeply. It felt like a 'holy moment' and we look forward to the fruit that will come from it.

June - an eventful month in several aspects! First, VRUK was proud to be involved in the Passion 07 event at Stoke-on-Trent with The Burn Band playing to a crowd of 1500 people. By all accounts they went down a storm (even though it was a sunny, hot day). The week following we had our southern worship leaders retreat at Lee Abbey in N Devon. With over 120 worship leaders in attendance, it was, again, a wonderful time of fellowship, bringing together the worship community from the southern Vineyard churches. We had our good friend Randall Butler come over from the US to share his long-time experience of worship leading. Randall is a veteran Vineyard worship leader having served under John Wimber in the early years of the Vineyard's influencial era of making worship 'culture current'.

Immediately following the retreat, another event occurred which gained national headline news - the BIG FLOODS! We didn't escape the flooding and our ground floor was up to a foot deep in brown, smelly floodwater for 3 days. Thankfully we were able to rescue the servers and other vital equipment before the floods hit us. The renovation work still continues!
July - VRUK alongwith the Hull and Bristol Vineyards took a team of 15 people to work for a week in an orphanage in southern Ukraine. Covering everything from drama, arts & crafts, sports and lots and lots of fun, our remit was to show the love of God to the kids, many of whom had no natural parents. Our theme through the week was that of Moses with the message 'God can use all of us to achieve great things for Him!'. The weather was baking hot (low 40s celcius) but the team were brilliant and we came back far more impacted than we'd anticipated. Plans are afoot for another team to go back there next May.

August - a fairly quiet month - thank goodness! The Trent band led worship at New Wine south for Venue 2 and were, as always, excellent!
September - the VRUK went away for a couple of days on 'retreat' - which was more of a 'thinktank' session. Given our busyness, we try to schedule in at least one of these times each year to enable us to really focus on planning for the future.

September also saw Chris & Nathan join with Cross Rhythms in their Ben Nevis Challenge to raise money and profile for more new Christian radio stations around the UK. You can read more about this feat in the blog entry.

Chris, Jeremy & Alex went to New York for 3 days to meet with our counterparts from Vineyard Music USA. This proved to be a productive time of discussing plans of close cooperation, principally through marketing efforts and joint productions. From NY, we flew directly to Oslo where we met and did some training with the Nordic Vineyard pastors. Joining us in Oslo to lead worship were members of the Hull Vineyard worship team.
October - quiet..... but important for us to attend to those important things that need, importantly, to be done!

November - this was the month of Area meetings. The Vineyard movement in the UK is divided up into regions to enable effective governance and development of the churches in those regions. For 3 consecutive weekends, Area meetings were held around the UK. This gave VRUK an invaluable opportunity to present to the leaders of these regions the plans, products and resources we have or are developing to enable worship in our churches to flourish. First up was the SE & London Area, followed by the SW region, followed by the Northern region. In amongst these, we also supported a Midland region worship training event in Birmingham.
At the end of November, Chris, Alex & Nathan attended the UK Songwriters Consultation hosted by Graham Kendrick. This was a great time to connect with the wider worship and songwriting community.
December - the usual Christmas rush! Today I found out that I had put 2 pages in the wrong place (one of our eagle eyed customers called to let us know). Our very nice printers have got the books back now and are working on printing the new pages and swapping the pages over so that its all in the right order. This should be done by early next week.

So for the moment we are not sending any books out. I spent this morning calling those of you who have bought a copy through our web-site and thank you all for being so nice about it. If you have bought one at an event please give me a call (I'm Dave) on 0870 1200 553.

Rachelle who transcribed the book for us had this little line in her email signature - feels awfully appropriate right now. From event set-up and organising to packing down the last cable on the day they were just great.

Dan Wilt was on form as ever - challenging, inspiring and arm-waving too of course! This was the 7th What Is Worship that we have done and I've been to all of them and still loving it.

The worship band was put together by the guys at the Southend Vineyard (another top bunch!) and they pulled together folks from the West Suffolk, Southampton and Hull Vineyards.

We worshiped, soaked in Dan's teaching and God presence on a sunny market day in Bury, where the soundwaves echoed out above a townfull of shoppers.

A wonderful day, a wonderful conference and a wonderful host church.

If you see a What Is Worship near you... get to it!

Postal Strikes

ANOTHER UPDATE (16.10.07)- The CWU and Royal Mail may have come to an agreement. We got to enjoy the drive up to and through Glen Coe in a sublime sunset - Chris and I both agreed that it was a wonderfully romantic setting but for the company... which was Chris and I!

Sadly the glorious weather of Friday turned to rain and howling winds for the Ben Neves climb (but we wouldn't want it to be easy anyway). Our party of 23, made up of Cross Rhythms staff and supporters, set off early-ish on Saturday to make it to the top to do a live broadcast.
From about half way up the visibility dropped to about 10-15 metres as we were enveloped in cloud and high speed winds.
All to say we made it to the top, where some reports hinted at 75mph winds - I'm not quite sure it was that high, but it was freezing - and then back down.

It was great to be able to connect everyone on the trip and support Cross Rhythms in their ministry as they have supported ours over the years. We hope and pray that this day was a significant and successfull one for them and their ministry.

New Website

The new VRUK website is here!

Take a look around - we are still adding a few pieces here and there but it's mostly there.

So whats new?

Well we have added loads of information about who we are and why we do things the way we do. Most of that is in the Our Ministry section. Tonight I shall pack my walking trousers, boots and socks for tomorrow I (Nathan) shall travel with Chris Whitelock up to Fort William. There's we shall meet with more intrepid explorers who shall be ascending Ben Nevis on Saturday.

This is to help raise funding for Cross Rhythms new radio stations around the UK. For more details see their website here. This is a truly daring feat, but not as insane as my attempts to find somewhere in Scotland to catch the England vs South Africa match on tomorrow night (surely they must allow me some freedom too).

Chris and I were thrilled today to see that the weather forecast for the Fort William area has been changed from sunny and fresh, to dark clouds and heavy rain as we will both get the joys of road testing our new water proof clothing.

In all seriousness though, we are delighted to be involved in this chance to help support another UK ministry. Check back next week for the news on how it all went and, I am sure, many an anacdote too.
Now where did I leave that Runrig CD..............

Back from Greenbelt

Back from Greenbelt where the guys from Trent played in the Underground venue on Saturday, when even at 9am the venue was almost full and Sunday when the venue was filled to capacity!
